How to Win a WSOP
Sometimes the simplest of questions are in fact the very most difficult to answer. Have you ever noticed this unusual fact of life? For instance, just the other day my little nephew Timmy asked me the following question: "Uncle Floyd, why is the sky blue?" Well, I stammered for a few minutes before telling them to go get me another beer. He came back promptly with a cold can of Pabst and sat there looking up at me with wide eyes, hoping I would clear up this matter which had been haunting his young mind for many weeks. Fortunately, an ice cream truck appeared on our block at that very moment and Timmy's attention was drawn towards more pressing matters, such as how to pry a few bucks out of his generous uncle for some chocolate/caramel cones.
So I got lucky that time. But there are other seemingly simple questions that I am not able to dodge with such ease. One of these is how exactly does a person go about winning at poker at the World Series of Poker? Well, where should I begin?
First of all, it does not hurt to be introduced to the game of poker at a very young age. Quite a few that WSOP champions over the years began playing poker before reaching adolescence, usually under the influence of an older friend or relative. In fact, I have been playing little Timmy for real money games since he was four years old and though he has yet to win and is going deeper into my debt, the day will come when the student beats the master. That will be the saddest day of both our lives, it goes without saying.
But, if you're not lucky enough to have a learned instructor to introduce you to the game of poker while you're still young, I would advise that you take advantage of the wonders of the Internet as they relate to gaming. In other words, get yourself over to one of the dozens of highly reputable online poker rooms currently available. Here, you will find the option of playing for free or "fun" money, until you get a chance to build up your confidence and skill level a little bit. Or you can dive right into actual cash games.
Now, once you have gotten comfortable with online poker, you will then want to enter into a satellite tournament, which really opens some potentially huge doors for you. Specifically, by winning any number of major satellites, such as the ones hosted by PokerStars.com, you can gain entry directly into the World Series of Poker. And then, before you know it, you will be sitting there on national TV squaring off against the best players in the world. I wish you luck and I will be watching.
